- XML stands for EXtensible Markup Language
- XML was designed to describe data
- XML tags need to be defined by you
- XML uses a Document Type Definition (DTD) or an XML Schema to describe the data and hence is self-descriptive
- XML is a cross-platform, software and hardware independent tool for transmitting information
